No detention system for degree students in Telangana

Hyderabad: The State government has decided to do away with the detention system for the conventional degree courses offered by various universities, this time. This means irrespective of the examinations result, the first-year students will be promoted to second-year, and second-year students will be sent to third-year. They need to clear the backlogs in the next year. However, this provision is not applicable for the final year students. They need to clear all the examinations to qualify for the degree.

According to the rules, students need to secure at least 50 per cent of the credits in order to get promoted to a higher class. The government took this decision in wake of extra-ordinary situations arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking to Telangana Today on Wednesday, Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) chairman Prof. T Papi Reddy said degree examinations will be conducted but there will not be detention system for first and second-year students.
“In the prevailing situation, students are stressed and we want to be more student-friendly. The final year students must clear all the exams to get their degree,” he said.
The TSCHE has already issued notifications for the various Common Entrance Tests (CETs) for admissions into professional courses offered by universities and its constituent, and affiliated colleges. These examinations have been postponed and they will be conducted with due consultations with the State government after the lockdown is lifted.
According to the authorities, Engineering, Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET), and Engineering Common Entrance Test (ECET) will be conducted first as they are not linked to the conventional degree exams. While the CETs that are connected with the degree examinations will be held only after degree exams are completed.
While the engineering colleges are conducting online classes, there are some issues pertaining to conventional degree colleges. The authorities are toying the idea of reducing the syllabus of conventional degree and engineering courses. The examinations may be conducted based on the reduced syllabus and they will not be held online.
